Mastering Leash Training: Tips for Walking Your Dog Like a Pro

Walking your dog can be a delightful experience, but it requires proper training. Follow these expert tips to ensure your dog walks politely on a leash.

Getting Started: Introducing the Collar and Leash

Step 1: Familiarize Your Puppy

  • Let your puppy wear a collar or harness and a leash for short periods indoors.

  • Associate the leash with positive experiences like playtime and treats.

Step 2: Introduce a Sound Cue

  • Use a sound cue (click, word, or tongue cluck) to signal that a treat is coming. Here are some really inexpensive dog clickers

Reward your puppy when they respond to the cue. These are some of my pups' favorite treats.

Building the Basics: Indoor Practice

Step 3: Practice Indoors

  • Walk a few steps with your puppy in a distraction-free room.
  • Reward them for following you with the leash on.

Taking It Outside: First Outdoor Walks

Step 4: Short Outdoor Walks

  • Keep initial walks short and be patient with new distractions.
  • Use the sound cue to redirect your puppy’s attention and reward them. (The Clicker)

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Pulling on the Leash

  • Stand still and wait for your dog to return to you without pulling.

Lunging at Distractions

  • Redirect attention with a treat before they lunge.
  • Increase the distance between your dog and the distraction.

Barking at Other Dogs

  • Ensure your dog gets enough exercise.
  • Use treats to redirect their attention before they start barking.

Consistency is Key

Gradually reduce the number of treats as your puppy improves. Keep some on hand to reinforce good behavior randomly.
